Six years. Millions of devices. One of the best writing experiences in tech.
And now it's gone from the shelves.
If you're sitting with a reMarkable 2 right now, you're probably asking the same question everyone else is:
Do I need to upgrade to the Paper Pure?
Honest answer: it depends on one thing.
First: What Actually Changed
The Paper Pure is the direct successor to the reMarkable 2. Same 10.3" screen. Same size. Same black and white display.
But under the surface:

What Changed That You Might Not Love
The Paper Pure uses more plastic than the reMarkable 2. reMarkable did this deliberately to use recycled materials and make the device more repairable — but if you loved the premium feel of the rM2, it's worth knowing.
The stylus is different. The Paper Pure uses an active, battery-powered Marker system — different from the reMarkable 2's passive stylus. Your old Marker won't work on the new device. The Paper Pure ships with a new Marker included, so you're covered out of the box — but spare rM2 styluses you have lying around won't transfer.
So — Should You Upgrade?
If your reMarkable 2 is working fine: There is no urgent reason to upgrade right now. Your device still gets software updates. Your templates and planners work exactly the same. The writing experience you love hasn't changed.
If you're noticing lag or slowness: The Paper Pure will feel like a completely different device. Faster processor, faster ink, faster navigation. If your rM2 has slowed down after a few years of use, the upgrade is genuinely worth it.
If storage is an issue: 32GB vs 8GB is a real difference if you keep a lot of large PDFs on the device. If you're constantly managing space, the upgrade solves that permanently.
If you're buying your first reMarkable: The Paper Pure is the right starting point in 2026. The reMarkable 2 is only available refurbished now, and the Paper Pure is a meaningfully better device at the same price.
The One Thing That Doesn't Change
Whether you're on a reMarkable 2 or a Paper Pure — your planning system works the same way.
Same screen size. Same PDF experience. Same hyperlink navigation.
