The two don't compete. They cover different parts of the same workflow.
You write by hand because it helps you think. The AI handles what comes next.
The Most Common Workflow: reMarkable + NotebookLM
You can export reMarkable notes as PDFs and import them directly into a NotebookLM notebook for analysis. On iOS, you can use the share sheet from within the reMarkable app to share directly into a notebook.</cite>
Once your notes are in NotebookLM, you can:
- Ask questions across all your notes at once ("what were the main action items from last month's meetings?")
- Get summaries of long handwritten sessions
- Find connections between notes from different dates or projects

It's not automated. But it's fast and it works on any AI tool you're already using.
For Meeting Notes Specifically
While reMarkable devices intentionally avoid integrated AI assistants, it is still possible to combine handwritten notes with AI-generated meeting summaries using external tools.</cite>
The workflow that works:
- Write your meeting notes by hand on reMarkable — faster and more focused than typing
- Export the page as PDF immediately after the meeting
- Upload to your AI tool of choice
- Get a structured summary with action items in seconds
Your handwriting captures the nuance. The AI does the admin.
What Doesn't Work (Yet)
A few honest caveats.
Convert to Text first if you can. AI tools read typed text better than handwriting in a PDF. If your handwriting search is good enough on reMarkable, use Convert to Text on your notebook pages before exporting — the AI will work with it more accurately.
PDF annotations are harder. If you've annotated a PDF planner rather than writing in a notebook, the handwriting sits as a layer on top. Some AI tools handle this well, others don't. Test with your own files.
This is a manual workflow. There's no automatic sync between reMarkable and any AI tool right now. You export, you upload, you go. It takes an extra minute — but for most people, that's fine.
The Bigger Picture
reMarkable's philosophy has always been: think on paper, stay focused, keep it simple.
AI's strength is pattern recognition, summarisation, and processing large amounts of information quickly.
They're not competing. They're complementary.
